How to Prepare for your Newborn Session - Calgary Baby Photographer

If you are reading this, I am assuming you are either pregnant or you have just given birth. Regardless, CONGRATULATIONS!!! This is such an exciting time in your life and I would be honoured if you chose me to document it. Life with a baby is a whole new world and I want to make sure when you are getting your newborn photos done it is an enjoyable experience and not stressful at all!

Here are some tips on how you can prepare for your newborn session :)

1. Plan to be late.

Make sure you give yourself LOTS of time to get ready in the morning before your session. Baby's are unpredictable. Sometimes they decide the spit up all over your outfit or have a blow out right before you leave your house. Plus we all know, husbands are almost as much work to get ready as children. You have to tell them what to wear, fix their hair, and mainly get them off the couch because like you they are exhausted from staying up all night with the baby.

2. Keep Baby Awake

I know your tired and keeping your baby awake all morning is going to feel like a ridiculously hard task but I promise you it will be worth it! You can try things like giving them a bath, tickling their toes, or even letting them kick in just a diaper. I can't tell you how many parents I have had come to my studio saying "Baby has been sleeping all morning but trust me, he sleeps so good during the day" only to have baby completely awake for the whole session.

3. Bring a Extra Outfit

Just in case, baby decides your outfit needs some spit up on it, make sure to bring a backup. ESPECIALLY if you are wanting a family photo where baby is naked (since babies rarely give you a warning when they need to use the bathroom).

4. Pack a Bag Beforehand

Just like you pack a bag for the hospital, I recommend packing a bag of goodies for your newborn session too. This way it limits the chance of you forgetting something.

Here is a list of items I recommend packing:

- Change of Clothes for everyone

- Pacifiers

- Extra Formula or Bottled Breast Milk

- Snacks (the session lasts from 2-3 hours so you may get hungry in this time)

- Water/Coffee

- Diapers, Wipes, Cream, Hand Sanitizer

- IPad or Toy for your older children to play with when their part of the session is over

- Baby Boys: Circumcision Care Items if needed

5. Know where you are going

Make sure you put my address into the GPS before hand so you will know exactly how long it will take to drive to my studio.

I hope this helps you prepare for your session and relieves some stress from your mind!
